Australia Short Term Award: Seafood Product Development

Australia Awards Indonesia proposes to deliver a Seafood Product Development short course to 25 participants; 4 from Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), one participant from the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s) and 20 participants from the private sector.

In line with the goal of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in developing marine and fisheries products that are competitive and sustainable for the welfare of the community, this course aims to improve the skills of those who work in the seafood industry and related sectors and increase the competitiveness of Indonesian seafood products. This course includes supply chain management, seafood safety, quality control, product development, business and marketing operations.

The following learning objectives are proposed. Further refinement of these would occur during follow-up consultations with Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises, Austrade and DFAT, particularly after participants are selected.

  • Understand the operational aspects of sustainable seafood harvesting and processing
  • Identify gaps/challenges in seafood supply chain and develop plans to address these (good practice in supply chain management)
  • Identify opportunities to ‘add commercial value’ to seafood products across the value chain
  • Understand the basis and principles of food regulation and seafood safety (SNI, FDA Regulation, HACCP etc.)
  • Design and assess management strategies (including input and output control) in seafood product quality control
  • Identify market requirements for seafood products, develop seafood product innovations and develop marketing strategies to promote and brand seafood products
  • Understand business planning (analyses, strategy development, operational planning and product development, financial projections, monitoring)
  • Identify strategies for community involvement, improvement and development in developing potential areas for food tourism
  • Benchmark Australian seafood products and practices including food tourism opportunities and foster mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders in the Australian fisheries sector
  • Understand the role and value of product-based industry associations

Dates and location

The course will be delivered over a two-week period in Australia. A pre-course workshop will be held in Bandung approximately 4 weeks prior to the commencement of the short course. A reintegration workshop will be held in Bandung approximately 2 months after the course, dates to be confirmed. The final delivery dates will be determined in consultation Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises, DFAT and the provider. The proposed schedule is:  

  • Pre-course workshop: 25-27 July 2016
  • Short course in Australia: 22 August – 3 September 2016
  • Post-course workshop: 28-30 November 2016
