Age of Wonderland 2016: Open Call
Big Data - Big DADA? **
After two successful editions of Age of Wonderland, its founding organisations Hivos and Baltan Laboratories are inviting artists, designers, scientists and other creative thinkers and doers to investigate, develop and share ideas or scenarios for its 2016 residency and public programme revolving around ‘Big Data’.
Data and technology promise to become revolutionary powers in the future, as together they can give insight into processes and things that are otherwise not visible. But if citizens are able to access any data to improve their own data, will their lives improve? Does the analysis and application of transparent or open information automatically lead to a sustainable world? If so, who decides if the world it leads to is indeed better?
The Age of Wonderland Open Call 2016 is requesting submissions by 22 February 2016 (00:00 GMT+1) that question if and how big and open data can be a tool for social innovation. Can it help us tackle the intricate global and local challenges our planet faces? If so, how? Where lie its potential, limitations and pitfalls?
Proposals are welcomed from creative professionals such as (young, emerging) artists, designers and researchers from Africa, Asia and Latin America, working on the intersection of art, design, science, technology and society. Creative practitioners who are connected to a local organisation, university or community are especially encouraged to apply.
The programme contains two residencies that will require a mandatory participation based upon a mutual and signed agreement. Both of the residencies take place at Baltan Laboratories in Eindhoven (NL). The first period will be in May /June. The second period will take place from 25 September until 3 November 2016. The budget for selected participants includes accommodation, 2 x economy return flight, per diems, (research) materials and a local travel allowance.

Age of Wonderland (2015-2017) is a programme for the exchange of knowledge and the development of innovative ideas as a starting point for the pursuit of systematic and sustainable change worldwide.
The programme is a platform and incubator for research and development of interdisciplinary ideas, facilitating tailor-made collaborations between (young) creative innovators from Africa, Asia and Latin America and practitioners within the Dutch Creative Industries as well as the network of Baltan Laboratories in Eindhoven. The Dutch Design Week will be the channel to share ideas, trigger debate and generate international exposure.
The three-year programme builds on the successful pilot project in 2014 jointly developed and implemented by Hivos, Baltan Laboratories and the Dutch Design Week (DDW). Since the 2015 edition, the Design Academy Eindhoven has been become a partner in this programme.
(** Dada was an artistic and literary movement that began in Zürich, Switzerland. It arose as a reaction to World War I and the nationalism that many thought had led to the war. Dada was the first conceptual art movement where the focus of the artists was not on crafting aesthetically pleasing objects, but on making works that often upended bourgeois sensibilities, and generated difficult questions about society, the role of the artist, and the purpose of art.)
