Islands in focus: Free condoms at 180 sites in Jayapura

About 100 volunteers and social workers have been deployed to distribute free condoms in 180 areas known for sex transactions such as hotels, dormitories, rental rooms and on the streets in an effort to slow down the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in the provincial capital and surrounding areas.
The secretary of the Papua AIDS Prevention Commission, Constant Karma, said in Jayapura on Tuesday that the move was aimed at moving condoms closer to where they were needed.
He said the volunteers and social workers never forced condoms on people but simply offered them and the decision remained with the people on whether or not to use them.
“The condoms are offered only to those exposed to a high risk of HIV infection because this is the only way to suppress the rapid spread of the fatal condition in the province,” he said.
