why is the issue important?
Economic empowerment of women is a complex concept that covers many dimensions. A lot of factors contribute to this, such as productive resource, norms, behaviours and institutions. While the economic empowerment of women, through their own ventures or through their participation in organizations, has proven to be beneficial for business, there is still a long way until gender equality will be reached.
Corruption - as an impediment for the economic empowerment of women - has a direct and negative impact on the development of gender equality. Corruption in political parties makes it more difficult for them to participate and mobilize their demands. Lack of transparent police enforcement also makes women more vulnerable to violence and less likely to get the protection they deserve. Other forms of corruption and extortion disproportionately affect women as sexual extortion, exploitation or human trafficking. All these scenarios have a direct impact in the economic empowerment of women.
