A Sriwijaya Air flight from Sentani Airport in Jayapura to Mopah Airport in Merauke was canceled on Saturday afternoon due to the eruption of Papua New Guinea's Mount Manan on Friday.

According to Sriwijaya Air manager in Jayapura Renold, the decision was made by the airline's head office in Jakarta on security concerns.

"We are not providing additional flights. Passengers of today’s canceled flight will fly out on Sunday," said Renold as quoted by tempo.co in Jayapura, Papua, on Saturday.

He added that 80 passengers were affected by the canceled flight.

Mopah Airport and Tanah Merah Airport in Boven Digoel regency, which are the nearest to Papua New Guinea, have halted operations since Friday.

According to head of Mopah Airport Asri Santoso, the airport, which serves around 20 flights per day, has reopened but several airlines are not operating flights. (kes)(++++)
