Call for Papers: Role of Civil Society Organizations in Advancing the SDGs

Deadline for submission of abstracts has been extended to 31 January.

“Leaving no one behind” is a central principle of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its aim is to ensure that development has positive impacts on the poorest and most marginalized. The advancement of the SDGs depends on concerted efforts by governments and all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, NGOs, and international finance institutions like the ADB.

The SDGs presents opportunities for governments to engage with CSOs particularly in public service delivery and to help ensure that development activities benefit the poor and disadvantaged. On the other hand, CSOs need to forge partnerships with other CSOs, the private sector and other international bodies on facilitating the implementation of the SDGs and on monitoring activities related to this process. For example, civil society can use official data to advocate for and track SDG progress.

Cooperation and inclusion are key concepts in the implementation of the SDGs, and which can be achieved through effective engagement with CSOs.

Call for papers

The Asian Development Bank Institute, together with the Asian Development Bank’s NGO and Civil Society Center, is launching this Call for Papers about “Engaging CSOs in Advancing the SDGs.” The paper should be able to expound on the role and contribution of CSOs in achieving the SDGs, and why governments and other development actors including ADB, should engage with them to advance the SDGs.

The paper should focus on any of the following themes:

1. CSOs in eliminating poverty (SDG 1)
2. Role of CSOs in ending gender-based discrimination (SDG 5)
3. CSOs in promoting social, economic, and political inclusion (SDG 10)
4. Strengthening resilience and adaptation to climate-related and natural disasters (SDG 13)
5. Promoting more accountable and transparent government institutions (SDG 16)
6. Revitalizing partnerships for sustainable development (SDG 17)
